Tiddalick the Frog

29/10/2018 By Dreamtime 40 Comments

Once upon a time, a long time ago, in the Dreamtime, lived a frog called Tiddalick.

Tiddalick was the largest frog in the entire world. One very warm morning, he woke up with feeling very, very thirsty and started to drink the fresh water. He drank and he drank and he kept drinking until all the fresh water in the entire billabong was gone!

When the other animals arrived at the billabong to get their morning drink, they found it was all dried up. This made them very sad.

They knew Tiddalick the frog had drunk all the water. They knew they needed to come up with a plan to get the water back, but they didn’t know how. They thought and they thought and they thought until they realised that the best way to get the water back was to make Tiddalick laugh. If they could make him laugh then all the water would come spilling out of his mouth and back into the billabong!

The first animal to try and make him laugh was the echidna. She rolled herself up into a tight little ball and rolled down the bank of the billabong like a bowling ball! The kangeroo laughed and so did the emu, but Tiddalick didn’t laugh.

The next animal to try and make Tiddalick laugh was the wombat. The wombat stood up on his hind legs and danced around in a circle until he fell over in the dirt! The Galah laughed and so did the goanna, but Tiddalick didn’t laugh.

The next animal to try and make Tiddalick laugh was the kookaburra. She perched herself on a branch close to Tiddalick and told her funniest story. It was so funny that she burst out laughing! But Tiddalick didn’t laugh. He just sat there with his big belly full of all the water.

Finally, the snake decided to try and make Tiddalick laugh. She started to dance and dance, wriggling and squirming all over the ground until she eventually tied herself into a knot. The knot was so tight that she struggled and struggled to untie herself but was stuck! Tiddalick watched struggle around, trying to untie herself, and let out a small chuckle. That small chuckle turned into a rumbling in his tummy before it turned into a great big belly laugh! The water came gushing out of his mouth and filled the billabong back up once again.

All the animals jumped with joy as they took big, long, gulps of water to quench their thirst.

How do you know? You have been on this land for 0-100 years roughly. When the First Nations people, who tell this story have been on this land for 60 thousand year (proven). Let that sink in.
In the last 50 years think of the technical advancements capitalism has accomplished. A lot.

Now think of not only the land and environmental changes, but also the peaceful systems people had accomplished all over the world from 60 thousand bc to 6000bc before European thugs invaded and took and claimed what’s not theirs.

We have a lot of history to catch up on.

    Everything is alive.

There might be a bit of science behind the Tiddalick story as the frogs/toads hide in the bottom of some waterholes until water returns and they breed, they make a lot of noise at that time croaking to attract a mate (laughing). We all have questions as children and as adults we should have answers for them, stories like this can direct attention back to social structure instead of science that has cruel experiments to thank for its discoveries – interesting as the world is, much of the information available distracts us from our social responsibility.

You’re wrong, they weren’t “thugs”, they were British officers transferring convicts to Australia as they thought it was uninhabited, if you actually think giant frogs existed or are biologically a possibility i strongly advise you seek mental help or catch up on your education, Makaratta.

    I came from the dream-time
    From the dusty red-soil plains
    I am the ancient heart
    The keeper of the flame
I stood upon the rocky shores
I watched the tall ships come
For forty thousand years I’ve been
    The first Australian

I came upon the prison ship
    Bowed down by iron chains
I bought the land, endured the lash
    And waited for the rains
    I’m a settler, I’m a farmer’s wife
On a dry and barren run
A convict, then a free man
    I became Australian

I’m the daughter of a digger
    Who sought the mother lode
    The girl became a woman
On the long and dusty road
I’m a child of the Depression
I saw the good times come
    I’m a bushie, I’m a battler
    I am Australian

We are one, but we are many
And from all the lands on earth we come
We’ll share a dream and sing with one voice
“I am, you are, we are Australian”

    I’m a teller of stories
    I’m a singer of songs
    I am Albert Namatjira
And I paint the ghostly gums
    I’m Clancy on his horse
I’m Ned Kelly on the run
I’m the one who waltzed Matilda
    I am Australian

I’m the hot wind from the desert
I’m the black soil of the plains
I’m the mountains and the valleys
I’m the drought and flooding rains
I am the rock, I am the sky
    The rivers when they run
The spirit of this great land
    I am Australian

We are one, but we are many
And from all the lands on earth we come
We’ll share a dream and sing with one voice
“I am, you are, we are Australian”

We are one, but we are many
And from all the lands on earth we come
We’ll share a dream and sing with one voice
“I am, you are, we are Australian”

Tiddalick the Frog was greedy and did not share the water with anyone else, he needed to make himself satisfyed by drinking all the water in the billabong leaving nothing else for any of the other animals. In order for the other animals to drink the fresh water, they had to make him laugh. The only successful animal to make him laugh was the snake, the snake was the lifesaver of the greedy frog.

What I learnt about the aboriginal spirituality from reading Tiddalick the Frog was that it taught children of the tribes a lesson not to be greedy with what you want and to always share no matter how much you want something.
The two aspects of religion involved in this story is repeated rituals, each animal was trying to make the frog laugh to get the water out of him, the snake was the only successful one. The story is a sacred story, it is sacred to the aboriginals.
The story taught me that your choices could impact others so you need to be important with the decisions you make.
The moral of Tiddalick the frog is to teach people that you cant always get everything you want, you can not be greedy and have to be mindful of everyone around you.

Tiddalick the Frog was a quite a greedy and selfish frog. He did not let anyone drink the water and instead drank it all for himself. He satisfied himself by doing this. The only way that any other animal could drink the water from the billabong was to successfully make Tiddalick laugh. The snake was the only successful animal to make Tiddalick laugh and was the lifesaver for all the other animals.
